The Adventure Begins

Greetings, everyone!

I have recorded many of my life's adventures on a blog. I wrote down the stories of my college career and my daily musings and observations from there and from Israel on Everyday Magic. Some of my mission adventures made their way onto Sister Pullan on the Prairie. As I have now begun a brand new chapter in my life, it is time for a new space for my stories.

I returned home from my mission six months ago last Thursday. I had a great many wonderful experiences in those months. I tended my three fantastic cousins--Kaya, Lily, and Sawyer--in Washington right after I got back, then went to visit them again at the end of June. I traveled around Italy and Israel and Jordan with my family, visiting the places where the Savior walked and the capitals of the world in times of yore. I directed shows at my community theatre, became a county delegate for the Wasatch Republican caucus, and held two callings in the singles ward. I read books, watched movies, visited friends, and learned to water ski. I also went back to North Dakota, where I saw many beloved friends and places.

Most important of all, perhaps, I was hired for my first real job. It wasn't easy. I applied for dozens of jobs and was interviewed for many, but always the answers were just about the same. "We regret to inform you..." "You are highly qualified and we loved you, but..." "The position has been filled."

Finally I interviewed at North Davis Junior High by two administrators and two English teachers. They loved me. They wanted to know how I felt about PLCs, or Professional Learning Communities (I love them), how I would differentiate for different learning levels (provide students with choices), and why I wanted to teach (a long story for another day). When the teachers were finished, the principal asked if they had any other questions. They said no and asked if he did. "No," he replied. "I already know I like her." I left walking on air. An hour later they called and offered me a job. I was told later that they were about ready to extend the offer while I was sitting there. "How long do we have to wait in order to appear professional...?"

The job couldn't be more perfect. The other teachers are so good to me. The district is so supportive of all their teachers, and new teachers especially. I am well loved and well taken care of here. My classroom is a beautiful, happy place. I worked hard on it.

My students are great. Some are a little crazy, some are a little quiet, some are readers, some are not, some come from supportive families, some come from hard places. I love them all. I think we are going to have a great year together.

I also have a great place to live, a great roommate, and a great singles ward. There is so much happening and so many wonderful things ahead of me. I can't wait to see where this next adventure takes me.

The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet
And whither then? I cannot say.
